Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence and risk factors associated with suicidal behavior among rural workers. This is a cross-sectional, analytical study with a quantitative approach. Data collection was performed using a sample characterization questionnaire, the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview to assess suicide risk, and the Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20 to identify psychological distress. Twenty-one rural workers participated in the study. The sample consisted mainly of individuals aged between 20 and 64 years, of non-white skin color, who did not have a higher education degree, worked more than 8 hours a day. 71.4% reported no history of anxiety, 81.0% reported a history of depression, 85.7% reported never having been diagnosed with any mental disorder, and 95.2% never having undergone any psychotherapeutic treatment. The study showed a significant prevalence of suicidal ideation among rural workers, higher than in some previous studies, highlighting the seriousness of this issue in the Brazilian context. The research reinforces the urgent need for interventions, mainly through public policies aimed at mental health in rural areas, aiming to minimize risk factors and offer adequate support to this vulnerable population.
