Abstract

The concept of a Person-Centered Approach to smoking cessation revolves around the central point of understanding behavioral change, with the healthcare professional guiding the user towards autonomy when physical and emotional withdrawal symptoms arise. This study aims to analyze the perceptions of healthcare professionals regarding the use of the person-centered clinical method in smoking cessation treatment at a primary healthcare unit in the East Zone of Porto Velho, Rondônia. This is an exploratory-descriptive study with a qualitative approach, conducted between August and September 2024, using a voice recorder to collect responses from an adapted semi-structured interview guide with 17 professionals from a primary healthcare unit in Porto Velho/RO. The textual corpus was processed using Maxqda software and detailed through triangulation of methods: empirical field, theoretical framework, and contextual analysis, considering the broad context of reality. Bardin's content analysis was performed using its thematic aspect. From the interviews, two categories emerged: limitations in care and training in smoking cessation treatment, and the use of person-centered care practices. It is concluded that there is an attempt to improve person-centered practices in smoking cessation treatment. However, these practices are still in the minority and diffuse. Furthermore, the presence of discourses aligned with the biomedical perspective is noticeable, which disregards comprehensiveness, protagonism, and interprofessional collaborative practices.
