Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of self-harm and suicidal ideation among university students and these behaviors after academic admission. This is a quantitative cross-sectional study conducted between 2023 and 2024 via Google Forms, involving 232 students from a public university in Mato Grosso. The sample was predominantly female (71.18%) and young (18-23 years old). Lifetime prevalence was 64.2% for suicidal ideation, 36.6% for self-harm, and 27.6% for suicide attempts. After admission, rates were 47.4%, 23.3%, and 23.7%, respectively. It was observed that while self-harm and attempts remained stable, suicidal thoughts increased by 18.6% after starting the program. The findings reveal high mental vulnerability, suggesting that academic demands catalyze psychological distress. In conclusion, it is urgent for institutions to prioritize mental health by implementing effective support and prevention policies.
