Abstract

Prenatal care involves multidisciplinary monitoring aimed at ensuring a healthy birth and maternal well-being. In the context of oral health, hormonal changes during pregnancy can worsen conditions such as periodontal diseases, requiring pregnant women to access and adhere to prenatal dental care. In this sense, the objective of this study is to demonstrate the importance of this monitoring in preventing harm to the mother/fetus dyad, as well as addressing psychosocial aspects and educational actions. This is an observational analytical study with a cross-sectional and descriptive approach, conducted through the analysis of medical records of 45 pregnant women treated at the José Frederico Fernandes Primary Health Care Unit in Nova Xavantina, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Information regarding age, gestational age, number of dental consultations, frequency of intraoral evaluation, and main treatments performed was collected, while ensuring confidentiality for the participants in accordance with the Research Ethics Committee's guidelines. The research results primarily highlight insufficient adherence to prenatal dental care, possibly associated with misinformation, cultural factors, fear, logistical difficulties, and failures in multidisciplinary integration, reinforcing the need for qualified care and health education, considering that pregnant women act as multipliers of habits within the family unit. It is concluded that prenatal dental care is essential for the early detection and management of oral changes resulting from pregnancy, contributing to maternal quality of life and fetal health. Thus, the low frequency of consultations observed signals the urgency of educational strategies and the strengthening of multidisciplinary action, ensuring comprehensive care for pregnant women.
